Troubleshooting Common Pool Equipment Issues
As a pool owner, there’s nothing more frustrating than dealing with equipment problems. From a pump that won’t start to a filter that’s clogged beyond repair, these kinds of hiccups can really put a damper on your summer fun. Luckily, many common pool equipment issues have relatively simple fixes – if you know what to look for.
At Aqua Bright Pool Service, we’ve seen it all when it comes to malfunctioning pool gear. And while we’re always happy to lend a hand, we also believe an educated pool owner is the best kind. That’s why we’re sharing our top tips for troubleshooting some of the most common pool equipment issues. Read on to learn what you can try on your own, and when it’s time to call in the pros.
Pump Problems
The pool pump is the heart of your entire filtration system, so when it stops working, it’s a pretty big deal. If your pump isn’t turning on at all, first check the circuit breaker to make sure it hasn’t been tripped. You can also try resetting the GFCI outlet it’s plugged into.
If the pump is running but not pushing any water, the issue is likely an obstruction in the pump basket or impeller. Remove the pump lid and basket, then use a garden hose to flush out any debris. You may also need to remove the impeller housing to clear out any blockages there.
In some cases, the pump may be making strange noises or seeming to struggle. This could signal a worn-out impeller, a faulty motor, or other internal damage. Unfortunately, these kinds of issues usually require professional repair or replacement.
Clogged Filters
Dirty pool filters are one of the most common equipment woes, and thankfully, they’re usually pretty easy to fix. The first step is to check the pressure gauge – if it’s 8-10 PSI higher than the starting, clean filter pressure, it’s time to backwash.
To backwash your filter, simply follow the manufacturer’s instructions. This will push all the accumulated dirt and debris out of the filter and back into your pool. You may need to repeat this process a few times to fully clear the filter.
If backwashing doesn’t seem to be doing the trick, it may be time to disassemble and manually clean the filter elements. This process will vary depending on your filter type (sand, cartridge, or D.E.), but it typically involves removing the filter, rinsing it off, and brushing away any stubborn grime.
Chemical Feeder Troubles
Automatic chemical feeders are a huge convenience, but they can also be a source of headaches if they’re not working properly. If your feeder isn’t dispensing chemicals as scheduled, check the timer and settings first. Make sure the unit is getting power and that any timers or controllers are set correctly.
If the feeder seems to be functioning properly, the issue may lie with a clogged, leaky, or broken chemical line. Carefully inspect the tubing for any kinks or cracks, and replace it if necessary. You should also check the feeder itself for any damage or buildup that could be interfering with chemical flow.
When to Call a Professional
While some pool equipment problems are fairly straightforward to fix, others can be tricky – or even dangerous – for the average homeowner to tackle. For example, if you suspect an electrical issue with your pump or other components, it’s best to call in a licensed electrician. Trying to DIY electrical work can lead to serious injury or even fire.
Similarly, if you’re dealing with a major equipment failure, like a pump that needs to be completely replaced, it’s usually best to call in the pros. Trying to install a new pump or other heavy-duty components on your own can be risky, and you may end up causing more damage in the process.
